Yanks Sweep The Red Sox, Open Up 6 1/2 Game Lead

"The Yanks' 6-1/2-game bulge over Boston represents their largest divisional lead since finishing the 2006 regular season 10 games ahead of the second-place Blue Jays. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the largest lead - at any point of a season - the Yanks have ever blown to finish out of first place was a six-game cushion in 1933." - nydailynews.com

No August lead is safe, but luckily for Joe Girardi and company, an exact repeat of the 1933 season is unlikely -- unless those pesky Washington Senators catch fire again!
